In the Color Theory in Pencil Workshop, participants will learn to observe color in new and enhancing ways in regards to vibrancy in skin tones. This style of color theory avoids using neutral colors in favor of blending bright primary and secondary colors to create depth and vitality in the depiction of life. This workshop will explore the mixing and layering of colors through the medium of color pencil but the theory and observation skills acquired in this workshop will apply to all media. Experience with color pencil is helpful but not necessary.
In the Color Theory in Pencil Workshop, we will be working with a live, clothed model in a long pose from 10am to 2pm over two days. Through individualized demonstrations and instruction you will have time to explore, evolve and observe how anatomy, lighting and living tissue influence color theory. These techniques will enhance your understanding of how to render what you seen and better utilize things like the photo references typically used in studio practice.
JP Morrison Lans has been working with these techniques and materials for over eighteen years, if you are new to color pencil or wish to use the material with more confidence this is a great opportunity to learn from an expert. Regardless of your interest in pencils you will gain skills in observing color that will last the rest of your creative life.

JP has applied - over the last three years - to 139 open calls for artists. With a roughly 20% success rate, the last few years have been busy for the artist with new opportunities, travel to residencies and a growing career. In this Workshop we will discuss how to streamline your application process, get organized about when and what calls to apply for, customizations that work for you, how to spot a shady deal and how we emotionally process both acceptance and rejection. After JP’s presentation the roundtable will open to all participants to ask questions and share their experiences as we explore this grueling process together (just listening is fine too).
